How to write (finance version)
You may have seen on social media the David Ogilvy memo from 1982 about "How To Write" . I've taken the liberty of translating it for a 2025 finance professionals.
The better you write, the higher you'll go in finance.
People who think clearly, write clearly.
Good writing isn't a natural gift. You have to learn to write well.
Here are 10 tips:
- Read Smart Brevity: The Power of Saying More with Less. Read it twice.
- Write the way you talk. Naturally.
- Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
- Never use jargon like synergise, operationalise, strategise, or impactful. They're hallmarks of someone trying too hard.
- Never write more than two pages on any subject. If you can't explain it in two pages, you don't understand it.
- Check your numbers. Always.
- Never send a report or email the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning, then edit it.
- If it's important, get a colleague (not an AI chatbot!) to improve it.
- Before you send anything, make sure it's crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.
- If you want action from someone, don't write. Go and talk to them.
The finance professionals who advance fastest are those who can explain complex matters simply. Master that skill and you'll stand out.
You're welcome.
